Reason behind the .5 rating scale?

I was thinking about this just now, and i was wondering why they choose this kind of rating scale. I thought of 2 reasons why they changed it...Reason #1- It avoids any ps3 and xbox 360 review complaints, thus saving the forums from flooding with angry fanboys. At IGN they use the .1 scale and i have noticed ALOT of ps3 games are scoring a couple points lower then the xbox 360 versions. Maybe gamespot did this to prevent any ps3 fans from leaving the site. Reasons #2- .5 just seems overall more straight to the point and less complicated when it comes to reviewing games. A lot easier for the reviewer. Idk but those reasons seem pretty legit...unless gamespot already have explained why they choose the .5 scale... Reason behind the .5 rating scale?
It was an uneeded commodity.Reason behind the .5 rating scale?
The .5 scale was just one part of GS' decline.
TBH, based on games like Twilight Princess, it just goes and show why the old rating system wasn't the best either. There really is no true difference between an 8.8 game and an 8.9 game. Or better yet, what did a 8.9 game lack that didn't constitute for it being a AAA game?

Such differences are almost impossible to fully quantify without a frame of reference (i.e. another game review) which leads to a clustering of scores around certain sections which ultimately makes the difference between certain games only a few percent and therefore undifferentiable. The .5 system forces a clearer distinction between games, and ultimately makes comparrison easier.
The .5 scale was just one part of GS' decline.
I agree that and the new layout, still better then IGN's new layout which butchered the best game website layout
people were treating a .1 difference like a 1.0 difference.
don't know but i hate it.
people were treating a .1 difference like a 1.0 difference.
Because usually it kinda is when a game gets lets say 7.9 or 8.9Motor storm is a good example, it was played safe with a AA hype but when it got 7.9 the ps3 fans thought that gamespot was purposely mocking them
Because usually it kinda is when a game gets lets say 7.9 or 8.9
I'm talking between 9.5 and 9.6.
